Why We Upgraded to a 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper

My wife and I recently took delivery of our new 2026 Model Y (Juniper) Long Range, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), in gorgeous Ultra Red, with the black interior. Our very first EV was a 2024 Model Y Standard Range, RWD in Stealth Gray, which we had purchased at the beginning of last year.

Why Did We Buy the 2026 Model Y Juniper?

We were very happy with our 2024 Model Y, but after test driving the 2026 Model Y “Juniper” and considering all of the improvements important to us, we decided to trade in our 2024 Model Y (which we owned free and clear) to Tesla and get the new 2026 Model Y Juniper. Fortunately, we did not need financing.

The factors that convinced us to upgrade from our 2024 Model Y Standard Range RWD to the 2026 Long Range RWD Juniper

  1. More Range. Almost 100 miles (357 miles vs 260 miles) of additional range.
  2. Ventilated Front Seats. This turned out to be a must-have feature. The ventilated front seats makes a huge difference in keeping our backs and legs from getting sweaty while driving during the hot Summer months.
  3. Better Ride Quality. The 2026 Model Y has a much better ride quality than our 2024 Model Y as a result of changes to the suspension and tires.
  4. Quieter Cabin. The 2026 Model Y has a noticeably quieter cabin than our 2024 Model Y resulting from greater use of double-glazed, acoustic glass, enhanced sound insulation and redesigned door seals.
  5. More Premium Interior Materials. The 2026 Model Y has a much more “premium” feel because of the better ride quality, quieter cabin and nicer materials now used within the cabin.
  6. Hands-Free Liftgate Opening. Walking up to the liftgate and having the it open automatically (after a few seconds of standing behind it) is a very convenient feature we like.
  7. Electronically Folding and Tilting Rear Seats. Sometimes we need to fold the rear seats to fit in all the stuff we buy from Costco and other places. Having the rear seats fold all the way down (and up) with the touch of a button is simply awesome.
  8. Premium Sound System. Our 2024 Model Y Standard Range RWD had a standard sound system with far fewer speakers (7) and no subwoofer. The 2026 Long Range, RWD now comes with the same Premium Sound system (15-speakers with a subwoofer) found in the All-Wheel Drive model and presumably, the upcoming Performance model. The standard sound system in our 2024 Model Y was good, but the new Premium Sound system in our 2026 Model Y is awesome.
  9. Front-Facing Exterior Camera. This is a welcome feature for getting a better look at what’s in front of you, when pulling up to park your Model Y. It also improves visibility for Autopilot and Actually Smart Summon.
  10. Blind Spot Monitoring Lights. The new 2026 Model Y has a small red LED light that illuminates (on both the driver’s side and front passenger’s side) in the A pillar speaker, if someone drives in your blind spot when you don’t have the blinker on.
  11. Improved Doors. The frameless doors of the 2026 Model Y, now close with a nicer, more hushed and solid sound/feel. The doors also now stay open on their own, when opened. On the previous generation Model Y, when you opened the door, it would tend to close on its own if you didn’t hold it open while stepping out of the car.
  12. Enhanced Connectivity. The new Model Y has improved connectivity and signal range compared to the previous generation of Model Y. This improvement is noticeable when I walk up to the charge port to disconnect the mobile connector because on the previous generation Model Y, the car would not wake up unless I opened the car door or opened the mobile app. On the new 2026 Model Y, the car now wakes up when I walk up to the car such that I can disconnect the mobile connector without opening the car door or the Tesla mobile app.
  13. Sleeker New Look. We love the sleeker, more modern, new look of the new Model Y Juniper’s daytime running lights and rear tail lamp with indirect reflecting light. At night, it displays a red pool of light behind it on the pavement (looks pretty cool).
  14. Better Glass Roof. The 2026 Model Y “Juniper” has a glass roof with two layers of silver. This silver “coating” is designed to improve both thermal and acoustic performance by reducing heat transfer into the cabin and minimizing noise from outside.
  15. Federal Tax Credit. And last, but not least, $7,500 off the price of the 2026 Model Y via the Federal Tax Credit, which expires on September 30, 2025. We decided to buy sooner to avoid the potential rush of orders closer to September.

Other New Features of the 2026 Model Y Juniper That Are Nice, But Didn’t Influence Our Decision to Upgrade

There are a lot of  improvements/refinements to the 2026 Model Y, that while nice, did not influence our decision to buy it.

  1. Rear Display. The 2026 Model Y now has an 8-inch rear touchscreen display, which is a nice feature, especially if you have young children, but is not important to us.
  2. Interior Ambient Lighting. While this is another nice feature, it’s not one that we really care about.
  3. Thinner Touchscreen Display Bezel.  Having a thinner bezel around the front/main touchscreen display is nice, but again, something that we don’t really care about.
  4. Quicker. The new Long Range, RWD, Model Y has a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds compared to 6.6 seconds for our 2024 Standard Range, RWD Model Y. Although this is a nice improvement, the 2024 Model Y was more than quick enough for us.
  5. Steering Weight Options. The 2026 Tesla Model Y now offers three  “steering weight” settings/options: Comfort (lighter feel), Standard (medium feel) and Sport (heavier feel).
  6. Emergency Door Release. The 2026 Model Y has a more obviously marked and easy to access, mechanical door release for the driver and front passenger, as well as the rear passengers, in the event of an electrical failure.
  7. Quieter Liftgate. The 2026 Model Y’s liftgate is a little quieter than the previous generation. While nice, it’s not something that influenced our decision to upgrade.
  8. Frunk Drain Plug. The 2026 Model Y now has a drain plug in the frunk, which is not something that we’d use, because we wouldn’t store ice in our frunk.
  9. Windshield Wiper Filler Cap. The filler cap for the windshield wiper fluid has now been moved to the front of the vehicle for easier access.
  10. Crossflow Wheels. Newly designed wheels in “black” and with aero inserts are designed to be more efficient, but better looking than the 2024 model Y’s “silver” wheel covers.
  11. Hood. The hood on the 2026 Model Y now closes with much less effort than the one on the 2024 Model Y.

So, if you are thinking about upgrading from old Model Y to a 2026 Model Y, we recommend that you test drive it first.

We found that in light of the 15 factors previously mentioned, from more range to the Federal Tax Credit, there was a compelling case to upgrade since we are planning to keep our new Model Y for a number of years to come.
